Potential sources of electricity on the eve of the heating season and winter, which can again turn into an energy crisis with blackouts, always attract attention. What can be used in addition to already known generators? One of the ways to obtain energy is the use of waste water and garbage. In the Chernivtsi region, the alternative is the treatment facilities of “Chernivtsivodokanal” and a solid household waste landfill. The city received a grant for the reconstruction of the water canal. If it is carried out according to modern requirements, it is possible to obtain biomethane and use it for the production of electricity. However, this is not planned. Wouldn’t it be better for “Chernivtsivodokanal” to develop a new project to offer an alternative, and to submit a new case to the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources? Similarly, waste water can be used to produce biomethane. Another way to obtain energy is to use the height differences in the landscape along which the pipes are laid. Chernivtsi is located on the hills and the difference is 80 meters.
As for the waste processing of the landfill, before the invasion, the city authorities had identified a company that would handle it. But the war made adjustments: they did not have time to put the facility into operation. Therefore, the issue is not resolved. The city is currently preparing documentation for the reconstruction of the landfill and the construction of a plant that will produce RDF briquettes. The authorities turn to European partners — the EU representation in Ukraine and the NEFCO and EBRD funds.
Of course, starting such changes is not an easy task. It is difficult for community budgets, the only hope is private business or grants. However, the implementation of such changes will provide new sources of energy in difficult times for the economy.
