The “elections” in the temporarily occupied part of Donetsk region have ended. From a legal point of view, they will have no consequences, as they are completely devoid of legitimacy. However, from a political and social point of view, they created serious problems: the involvement of Ukrainians in the occupied territory in the Russian political space, the activation of propaganda, a significant increase in the number of collaborators.

The Kremlin also used the occupied territories themselves as a propaganda tool: high results of Putin’s party “United Russia” in the elections is intended to show that the so-called “new subjects” massively support the occupying power.

On the “Single Election Day” in Russia, which actually lasted over three days, from September 8 to 10, the Russian authorities also held so-called “elections” in the temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories. In particular, in the Donetsk region, they “elected deputies” to the occupation body “People’s Council of the DPR” and to the illegitimate Donetsk City Council.

Only Russian parliamentary parties could participate in these “elections”.
