Chernihiv region was under enemy’s attack from the first day of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. As early as February 2022, part of Chernihiv Oblast came under temporary occupation. The Russians also terrorized the part of the region that was held by our military with artillery fire and airstrikes.

Finally, the Armed Forces of Ukraine liberated the region in early April 2022. In June, the Chernihiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office officially reported that 478 civilians, including 22 children, had been killed by the Russian invaders since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Chernihiv Oblast. Another 692 people were injured.

During the temporary occupation, Chernihiv Oblast also suffered significant destruction: the Russians destroyed the houses of local residents, administrative buildings, schools, hospitals, and kindergartens.

Local agricultural enterprises were also badly affected, some of which at that time served as “points of invincibility”, where locals could charge their phones, get warm or take food.

How Chernihiv farmers survived the occupation and how they are recovering after the retreat of the Russians is in our material.
